No Such Thing As the World Wide Web

Well there isn’t really, the web was supposed to be a global communication network accessible all. From those first few shares on Arpanet all those years ago it is unbelievable how far we have come, yet globalisation of the information is actually starting to recede.

The reason is simple Internet filtering which is increasingly being used by almost every country under the sun. Pioneered by Saudi Arabia and China, if you’re surfing in those countries you get access to the Saudi Web or the Chinese Web. Whatever you wish to call it, you certainly won’t have access to the same information in Beijing as you will in Chicago.

However the state seeks to control access to the Internet, whether laws and regulations on their own. Or even when they are combined with technical blocks such as content filters and firewalls, it is clear if you want unfettered and unmonitored access to the Internet then you need anonymous surfing technology to allow it. Despite the attempts of organisations like the Internet Governance Forum a single agreement and set of laws on the Internet looks a very long way off.
